Professional Development

Just as parents are busy picking out backpacks and school supplies to get ready for the new year, the staff at Trevose Day School have spent the past week preparing as well. Each day, they have been setting up their rooms as well as participating in some meaningful professional development opportunities.

We were honored and thankful to learn from these incredible professionals.

Dr. Karen Kaplinski, Professor in education at Bucks Community College, delivered a very thought provoking morning on childhood trauma and recognizing behavioral, emotional, and learning issues in young children. The staff walked away with a tremendous amount of knowledge and helpful information to best assist and support our students in the classrooms each day.

Marie Conti, Founding Board Member and Treasurer at Pennsylvania Montessori Alliance, presented an informative workshop on how to deliver an effective and informative parent teacher conferences. Although most of the staff have been doing conferences for years, it is always great to get different perspectives and tips to create the best partnerships with our families.

Ron Chelsvig, author of “A Cup of Tea with Sadness,” shared his beautiful, heartfelt book with our team. We had a wonderful conversation with him about how children are often told both how and when they should feel and what feelings are appropriate.  A Cup of Tea with Sadness” is a gentle book with a profound message to have open conversations children to help them cope with and understand their feelings.

We rounded out our week with trainings in all of our safety protocols with the Bensalem fire and police department.  The safety and the well being of each and every child is of utmost importance. These trainings give the staff the confidence to carry out these procedures calmly and effectively.

Our PD is never complete without a training and review of the Danielson Rubric with our Director of Professional Development, Essie Cherkin. This training sets the tone for each teacher to meet with and set their own goals and objectives for the school year with our Head of School, Gwynne  Frischmann.
